Outdoor Kitchen Design

Often called the ‘heart’ of the house, the kitchen is a space that everyone naturally congregates in. When designing your outdoor entertaining space, the outdoor kitchen layout, facilities, and connection to surrounding areas can also have a big impact on the success of the area, and form that same hub. We take a look at what’s possible and how to get things right..

The ability to seamlessly transition from indoors to out is something sought after by many homeowners today, with the outdoor entertaining space acting as an extension of the home itself that can link to the garden beyond. More and more clients are now wanting a customised cooking space included in this area. This can simply accomodate the humble Weber, or a range of different cooking, cooling and storage options depending on the wants and needs of the user. How to successfully incorporate these elements into a built in solution involves an in depth conversation with the client to firstly understand the requirements, and then a tailored solution to achieve this.

MATERIAL

While there are various options available from a construction method, we’ve found the use of custom formed concrete to be the preferable medium for best results. This material allows for complete customisation of the bench, and incorporation of any appliance. It also offers a durability like few others, and can be installed in just about any location given it’s formed and poured on site. The ability to also integrate additional function such as seating and retaining within the main kitchen structure, and the fact that it seamlessly ties into a range of aesthetic styles, makes it the preference for the majority of our projects.

INCLUSIONS

For those contemplating the installation of an outdoor kitchen the selection of the cooking elements to be included within can be one of the most exciting (and time consuming!) parts of the process. There are a multitude of options available in today’s market, and while the gas barbecue and stand alone pizza oven are still common constants, many are exploring the world of charcoal, wok, and teppanyaki cooking as well, and how they can bring these previously more commercial options into the comfort and convenience of their own home.

The outdoor kitchen nowadays goes beyond a simple place to cook though. It’s common to also include beer and wine fridges, sinks, warming trays, wood stores, dishwashers and of course general storage. Inclusion of all, or a combination of, these elements provides self sufficient amenity to any outdoor space, and becomes the perfect place to both cook and entertain outside.

CONSIDERATIONS

Given the extent of items that can be included in an outdoor kitchen, careful consideration of the configuration is crucial in order to maximise function and ensure everything works harmoniously and aligns with each client’s specific requirements. The ability to have multiple cooking options may be weighed against having the clear bench space to serve platters etc. when hosting a large group. Does the outdoor kitchen overlook a scenic section of the garden, where the addition of bar seating as well as cooking would be ideal? The space available, the access in and around this space, the cover provided to this space, and the connection to the internal living areas are also key considerations when designing this element.

REQUIREMENTS

The availability of a variety of inclusions, and consideration of functional and spatial requirements, mean the design of any outdoor kitchen requires a high level of understanding of all components, along with an equally high level of detail drawings.

At times this can be the most complex component of a landscape project, and a considerable investment, so it’s no surprise it’s accompanied by plans, sections, elevations and specifications to clearly convey the construction requirements.

A well designed outdoor kitchen can transform an entertaining area, providing a place to cook, congregate and create long lasting memories. The key to success? Considered and collaborative design and comprehensive details to convey these ideas.
